Arlo says this camera can last for up to five months on a single charge, while Arlo Pro cameras that require base stations claim to last up to six months. To learn more about what data Arlo collects and shares, check out Arlo's privacy policy here. The camera has a digital 12× zoom, so you can get a better look at unfamiliar faces farther away, but zooming in degrades the quality of the image even more, so it doesn’t help a lot. Today, we are going to check and test out the new essential spotlight camera from Arlo. It took no more than 10 minutes. If you do experience these issues, you can connect your Essential camera to the compatible Arlo base stations I listed above and it might help.Â, Overall, the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera is a good camera at a good price. CNET también está disponible en español. SAN JOSE, Calif. — September 15, 2020 — Arlo Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: ARLO), one of the leading internet-connected camera brands, today announced the all-new Arlo Essential Wire-Free Video Doorbell which brings the award-winning features of its popular Wired Video Doorbell to an easy-to-install, wire-free, battery-powered design. I mean, it works, but you probably have a better Micro-USB cable in your junk drawer at home.Â, Despite its different battery design, the Essential cam looks a lot like Arlo's other battery-powered outdoor cameras. It isn't sold with one, but it is compatible with select Arlo base stations as an optional add-on (specifically, base station models VMB5000, VMB4540, VMB4500 and VMB4000). The Essential camera has customizable armed and disarmed modes, including the ability to set rules like, "If motion is detected (and the camera is armed), then record video and turn on the camera's built-in siren." That helped reduce the number of alerts I received and slowed the drain on the battery.Â, I enlisted Kevin to test out the camera's two-way talk feature and it was remarkably clear. Ring Video Doorbell buying guide: Which is best for you? I've been waiting for Arlo to offer a more affordable outdoor security camera for a long time -- and it's finally here. USB charging The USB charging cable that came in the box with your camera is for indoor charging only. Features of the Arlo Essential XL Spotlight Camera (US$149.99) include: Privacy is an increasingly important consideration when you're thinking about buying a smart home device, especially one with a camera and/or a microphone. November 27, 2020 Cameras Arlo, Arlo Essential XL Spotlight, camera, features, home, new, price, Review, security, smart Views: 44 Arlo has remained one of the leaders in the security camera sphere, offering exceptional cams packed with premium features that produce excellent results. I started testing my Essential camera on Aug. 11 fully charged, and the battery is at 95% as of writing this two days later. All rights reserved. To achieve this, Arlo added a spotlight and color night vision to the Essential. This is a step down from the Arlo Pro 3, one of our favorite outdoor security cameras, which captures 2K video (to a max resolution of 2,560 × 1,440); and the field of view (how much the lens can “see”) is quite a bit wider at 160 degrees. It’s also the company’s first hub-free camera, which is especially handy for those who don’t have the extra Ethernet ports on their routers. Later on, I set up a motion zone to reduce the coverage area to our little backyard garden to make sure no more pests were stealing our tomatoes (I had no idea squirrels ate tomatoes, but apparently they do). This is a small, do-it-yourself wireless surveillance camera in your home. On a slow day, the battery used around 11% of its charge. Essentials has nice, clear video during the daytime. The Essential Spotlight Camera has *most* of the same great Arlo features for much less money. I don't have a smart display at home to test this out with the Essential camera, but I have successfully viewed live feeds on smart displays when testing other Arlo cameras at the CNET Smart Home pre-quarantine.Â. Since you need to unscrew it from its mount every time you need to charge the Essential, I worry that the threads will quickly strip and you’ll no longer be able to mount the camera. When you tap from the miniscreen on the dashboard to full-screen view, the app buffers for several seconds, too, which can be frustrating if you’re trying to use the two-way feature to communicate with a person at your door, or simply want to take a better look at a person. Wire-free and weather resistant to work indoors or out. 1080p. That said, this $130 camera strips out some things too. You can hear them, and they can hear you — at least that’s the way the camera is supposed to work. If the spotlight is enabled in the app, it will flash or pulse light when motion is detected at night. I tested out my Essential Spotlight Camera without the optional base station and I did experience a slightly longer delay (up to 10 seconds) between a motion event and getting an alert on my phone. Even worse, the camera doesn’t have a removable battery, like the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight does. Arlo Essential captures video in 1080p resolution, with an integrated spotlight and color night vision. All the items that you need to mount your doorbell came in the box with your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell. What to know before becoming a guest or host. Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera is affordable and chock-full of cool features If you are a homeowner in 2020, you should have an outdoor smart security camera -- … So when we geared up to review the Pro 3, Arlo’s 2K wireless camera system released in 2019, we wanted to see if that same flexibility, ease of use, and seamless functionality were as evident as in previous Arlo models like Arlo Pro 2 or Arlo Ultra. Arlo also announced the Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free, which is a battery-powered version of the Arlo Video Doorbell, though it still works with doorbell wiring. But still, these are real concerns. Note: The battery in the Arlo Essential wire-free camera can’t be removed. Arlo Essential Spotlight: Design and installation The Essential looks a lot like the Ultra and Pro 3. Instead of a button on the bottom of the camera you press to remove the battery, there's a tab you open to access the Micro-USB charging port. All you need is the Arlo app. For example, on the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight camera, if there is a part of your yard you don’t want to record, the camera will zoom in to avoid it. There are two security features I like as well. Essential is a bit bare-boned, which I guess explains the name. That’s not super helpful if you need the Essential to monitor more than just your front porch. The service starts at $3 per month; read more about Arlo Smart here. The sensors constantly getting triggered means the camera is constantly recording — and wasting the battery. Wire-free and weather resistant, Arlo Essential works indoors or out. Set it up yourself in just a few easy steps and clearly see who's there, even at night. So, if the sensors get tripped only every so often, you would still need to charge the camera every nine or ten days. If you want a good floodlight camera, go with the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight: The light is brighter, the siren is louder, and it has a lot more features for around $120 more. It has the same basic specs as the Essential which scores 4.3/5 – not bad for a 1080p security camera. To mount your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell, you need the following: Arlo Essential Video Doorbell (wired or wire-free) Doorbell mounting plate; Angled mounting plate (optional) With an integrated spotlight and color night vision, you’ll clearly see who’s there, even at night. Faces were so blurred that you’d be hard-pressed to pick out any features. The more affordable Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera connects directly to Wi-Fi networks without an additional base station. The app tended to stall and buffer whenever I tried to use it, too, making the process even more frustrating. The Arlo Essential is the latest entry-level device from Arlo, offering 1080p video capture, 2-way audio, IR for night vision as well as an LED floodlight. The app guides you through the setup step by step. While Arlo’s app is easy to navigate, I found that it glitches quite a bit. That can save you time! Arlo Essential Spotlight Security Camera captures video in 1080p resolution. If you simply need a good outdoor camera, this Spotlight is shining over here. The Arlo Essential just doesn’t hit the mark when it comes to video clarity, features, or the app. Just as when it records daytime footage, faces were an issue, but to an even bigger extreme. On the other end of the spectrum, the Wyze Outdoor Camera packs a whole lot of features for substantially less — that camera costs just $50! Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Review At first glance it’s hard to notice and differences between the Essential Spotlight and the Pro 3. One useful feature you won’t find in most cameras is lock-screen notifications, which you get here. Although I can't say for sure the lack of a base station was the culprit for the slightly longer delay in motion alerts, it's certainly possible. See the essential details, day or night. Unfortunately, 80db isn’t very loud, and it’s one of the quietest sirens we’ve seen on outdoor security cameras. Arlo is one of the most prominent purveyors of battery-powered cameras, and it has a new one to talk about today. While optional after the three-month period ends, Arlo Smart is necessary if you want to view saved video clips in the app, create motion activity zones and receive custom person, animal, vehicle and package alerts. Instead of a removable battery, you have to bring the whole camera inside to charge it and the USB charging cable Arlo provides is comically short.Â, Unlike the majority of Arlo's other outdoor cameras, this model doesn't require a base station. There are outdoor security cameras that have much better video quality for less than $130 with apps that work far better. Factor in more time if you plan to drill holes and install your camera more permanently.Â. There are several really great choices on our list of the best security cameras, models that are less expensive and work better — although they may not have a built-in light. This process should only take about five minutes. This completely wireless camera sports 1080p HD video, two-way audio, and cloud recording through the Arlo Smart service.
